CURRICULUM VITAE
Mr. Pekka Haavisto is a former Finnish
Minister for Environment and Development. He is currently the European
Union Special Representative (EUSR) for Darfur.
He
has been workin 1999-2005 for the United Nations Environment Programme
(UNEP) post-conflict environment assessments. He has been chairing
UNEP’s environmental assessments to Kosovo, Serbia and Montenegro,
Afghanistan, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Iraq, Liberia
and Sudan.. He has also chaired the depleted uranium assessments
to Kosovo, Serbia-Montenegro and to Bosnia-Herzegovina.
He has been
a Visiting Researcher at the Finnish Institute for International
Affairs, a Visiting Professor to the University of Bristol and a
Visiting Lecturer to the University of Helsinki and to the NATO
School in Oberammergau.
He has been
an adviser to the United Nations Secretariat of the Convention to
Combat Desertification, and a member of the Heinrich Böll Foundation
“Jo’burg Memo” team prior to the Johannesburg
2002 WSSD Summit. He was also a member of the UN Millennium Task
Force.
Mr. Haavisto
has been the Spokesperson for the European Green Party 2000-2006.
He was the Minister of the Environment and Development Co-operation
in Finland during 1995-99, and a member of the Finnish Parliament
in 1987-95. Mr. Haavisto was one of the co-founders of the Green
Party of Finland, and the chairman of the Finnish greens 1993-95.
His special interests are foreign policy and global environmental
issues.
